SECOND SKIN

Second skin is a type of medical-grade adhesive film that is often used in the tattoo healing process.
It’s a transparent, flexible, and breathable material that acts as a protective barrier over freshly tattooed skin.

I typically choose to use second skin for smaller, lighter tattoos, or for areas of the body where the absorbent pads wouldn’t be suitable for application.

If you experience any allergic reactions to adhesive bandages, I advise against using second skin as your aftercare dressing.

Follow the advice given below:

  • Day 1 and Day 2.
    – Leave the second skin on for 48 hours (2 days)!
    No more than that, please.
You will notice that it will fill up with ink, blood and plasma – this is completely normal.
    – Do not poke the second skin or play with it as it can rupture.

    Attention!
    – If you realize the second skin is causing any reaction on the first night/following morning OR if it just comes off by itself before the 2 days, just remove the second skin and leave the tattoo as it is. Contact me IMMEDIATELY to report reaction and I’ll guide you from there: in that case I’ll give advice on whether to cover it with a tattoo pad or not.

Make sure you keep it clean and free from any contact with dirty hands, dirty clothes, pets or anything that could cause skin irritation or contamination. It

  • This is the dry healing phase. PLEASE, DO NOT use moisturizer until the DAY 3.

Day 3 onwards.
– In case the second skin stayed perfectly for the 2 days required, now it is time to remove it!
– Gently pull the second skin towards you until it completely comes off.
This may be easier in the shower under lukewarm water.

– Wash the tattoo gently with antibacterial soap under lukewarm or cold water! Don’t wash the tattoo with hot water!
– Dab dry with GOOD QUALITY kitchen roll (such as Plenty Max).
(DON’T RUB!). Moisturize 4-5 times daily with recommended tattoo cream.

I highly recommend Cicaplast Baume B5 (La Roche Posay) and Nivea Soft.

Wee thin scabs will appear, just leave them be, they will come off naturally.
Ideally the skin will flake with thin scabs.

If they itch, don’t scratch!
(Put a piece of clothing on top and give gentle taps, usually helps!)

Keep moisturizing until the whole healing process is done, around 4 weeks.

Shiny skin will be noticeable for a while even after 4 weeks. I recommend to keep moisturizing after the 4 weeks (only after 4 weeks you can use other moisturizer that you’re used to other than the recommended ones).

General precautions!

  • Do not pick, scratch or even touch your new tattoo unless you’re cleaning it until it’s fully healed. If your skin itches, reapply the soothing balm – clean hands always!
  • Ensure that furry friends stay clear! While pets may be adorable, they can introduce infections to your new tattoo.
  • Do not use aftercare products that are not recommended by me.
  • Do not soak the tattoo in water (e.g swimming or baths) for at least 15 days.
  • During summer avoid direct sunlight exposure (you can’t use sunblock until it’s fully healed!).
  • Do not workout excessively.
  • Do not use fake tans, oils, cosmetics or sunblock (as mentioned) on the tattoo area until it’s fully healed (1 month at least).
  • Do not let the tattoo get dirty (including touching it with unwashed hands, sweaty clothes, pets etc). I highly recommend not attending outdoor events that involve sitting on the grass or any situation where you won’t be able to keep your tattoo clean.
  • Wear loose clothing to allow the tattoo to breathe and avoid friction.
  • Avoid at all costs eating greasy food (fried food) during the period of healing.
  • Drink lots of water and don’t forget to follow all the steps.

Thank you!
